Video journalist Jon Groat helped garner Newsweek the first Emmy nomination of any U.S. magazine for “Voices of the Fallen: The Iraq War Through the Words of the Dead.” In 2008, he was nominated for a second Emmy for NEWSWEEK’s original business series “The Crunch.” His work has been honored by the Webbys, The National Press Club, the Magazine Publishers of America, the Society of Professional Journalists, MIN and the National Association of Black Journalists.

At Newsweek, he's profiled a survivor pulled from the rubble of the twin towers, recounted a Nazi prisoner's tale through fascinating writings he had left behind as "The Cigarette Diaries", documented former Japanese-American internees as they roadtripped back to the town of their imprisonment, told the epic tale of a giant painting that made men weep, and caught up with the descendants of both Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass. For Glamour Magazine, he edited a heartrending profile of Ugandan child soldiers for their 2007 Women of the Year Awards.

During the 2008 elections, he covered the campaign trail and conventions, producing video interviews with Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Michael Bloomberg, Laura Bush, Cindy McCain, and Ron Paul. In 2009, he managed production of NEWSWEEK’s viral sensations “The District,” “Return to Oz: The Munchkins 70 Years Later,” and "The Decade in Seven Minutes."
